Baldwinsville Is it possible to sit back and relax while you’re on the edge of your seat laughing? Well, come to the C.W. Baker High School Drama Club’s presentation of George Herman’s A Company of Wayward Saints and find out.
The play follows a troupe of improvisational, Commedia dell’Arte actors. (Commedia dell’Arte, meaning comedy of craft, is a classic Italian performance style that delivers loud, vulgar, exciting humor and there are stock characters that are immediately recognizable in Commedia performances.)
It is often said that comedy is much more difficult to perform than tragedy, and for Baker High School’s Drama Club, this becomes even more difficult since A Comedy of Wayward Saints involves a play-within-a-play – a comedic performance about a comedic performance. A double whammy!
While trying to finance a way home, the leader of the troupe, Harlequin, brings a duke to their performance. The duke offers to fund their return home if they are able to perform “the history of man” to his liking. The group, being witty and creative, delivers scenes of birth, adolescence, marriage and death using scenes such as the biblical story of Adam and Eve, the assassination of Julius Caesar and the homecoming of Odysseus to Penelope. Trouble arises when the actors’ conflicting attitudes dominate the performance and the play does not go well. The group must put their egos aside and work as a team if they are to make the show a success and be granted their trip home.
A Company of Wayward Saints in under the direction of Tom Minardi, a Baldwinsville resident and retired long-time English teacher and drama director at Liverpool High School. It is being produced by Baker English teacher Kathleen Pickard and the members of her stage and screen classes.
